INEC postpones general elections in Nigeria.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that it has extended the dates of the presidential ,National Assembly and Governorship elections. This announcement was made at about 11.00 pm on Saturday, 7th of February015 by the chairman of the commission, Professor Attahiru Jega.


The INEC chairman stated that this decision was reached after wide and in depth consultations with all the stakeholders involved or affected by the election and by the advice of the National Security Adviser and other security agencies.

The new dates for the elections were given by him as March 28 for the presidential and National Assembly elections and April 11 for the governorship elections.

The elections had been scheduled for the 14th and 28th respectively before this current development.

Jega said that it was out of INEC's capabilities to guarantee the safety of all potential voters and their ad hoc staff and that since the security chiefs in Nigeria say they are not available now as they have started a massive offence operations against the Boko Haram insurgents and they need time for that as it will helpi in creating a more peaceful environment for people to come out and vote.

He said also that the commissioned was to accord them the opportunity to solve the problems and complaints concerning the collection of the PVCs to registered voters.
