After 26-Hour Surgery Two 10-month-old twin girls, Knatalye and Adeline, went into surgery on Feb. 17 fused at the chest and abdomen, but after a long 26-hour procedure, left the operating table successfully detached. Miraculous!
The surgery was the first time a set of twins conjoined at the chest and abdomen (in this way) had been separated successfully, according to KHOU -TV . T
he girls shared the same chest wall, lungs, pericardial sac (the lining of the heart), diaphragm, liver, intestines, colon and pelvis. Wow!
“This surgery was not without its challenges with the girls sharing several organ systems,” Dr. Darrell Cass , pediatric surgeon and co- director of Texas Children’s Fetal Center, told the outlet. “Our team has been preparing for this surgery for months, and we’ve done everything from working with our radiology experts to build a 3-D model of their organs, to conducting simulations of the actual separation surgery.”
All of that preparation paid off! The Long Surgery Was A Team Effort The procedure called for six different types of physicians. Doctors from pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, urology, liver transplant surgery, orthopedic surgery and pediatric gynecology all came together to work on the two girls.
